gadget lust

I am in love with my iPhone. I've had it for several weeks now and I am just getting more attached. I haven't had gadget lust like this since my first macintosh when I was in middle school. It's one of those interfaces that is not an incremental improvement, but a quantum one. Yeah, there is still a lot to work on, but they've managed to put together a completely different user experience. It's a handheld computer that really... just... works. At least if you are a mac user. It's the mobile computer I've always wanted - seamless synching with my laptop and a useable browser, calendar, plus everything in my video ipod. Amazing. The bright beautiful touch screen I wouldn't have even known to wish for.

I am debating whether or not to go to AWA. My fall schedule is a mess but it sounds like a fun time. What to do?

Darkrai and Deoxys

Share

For my son's birthday we went to see the summer Pokemon movie yesterday ^^. I didn't read up on it well enough and when we got to the theater we saw a bunch of kids with their DSs and we learned that they were giving away Darkrai for Pokemon silver and pearl at the theater. Luckily the theater guy said we could come back to get our Darkrai, so the kids are off with dad in the midst of pre-typhoon weather to get their little virtual creature.

As I've been looking around the web, it turns out that kids can also get Deoxys if they have bought a special presale ticket at 7 Eleven. They buy the ticket at 7 Eleven and then they have to go to a participating retailer like ToysRUs with their DS to get the pokemon.

This is the first promotion of this kind that I've seen, linking brick and mortar and location based entertainment with portable devices. Seems to be a fitting way to commemorate the 10th year of Pokemon movies. And it seems to be working because the theater yesterday was PACKED, including the shop selling Pokemon goods.

Back in Japan

Wow it's been a while since I've posted here. What a crazy spring it was.

I'm back in Japan now and getting some time to catch up on life, work, getting back to big project, and manga reading :p.

Yesterday I went out to the bookstore and stocked up. I think I'm going to start in on the Haruhi novels. I picked up Yotsubato for my daughter and she loves it. Very cute. For my son I picked up the first volume of the Sarugetchu manga :D. Which he liked. A lot.

I haven't set up the TV yet for the kids but maybe tonight we'll watch the Doraemon special and start getting caught up on what's happening this season. We're pretty much over jet lag now so can do more evening activities.

24/7: A DIY Video Summit

This has been a long while in the planning, and much planning to come... but we've announced our plans to put on a festival/summit for DIY video and started up a thread on diyvideo.

I'm already having loads of fun working with folks from different internet video communities to pull this together and I'm looking forward to this being a big part of my life over the next year.

Scanlation Vids on YouTube

Share
dango
So what is up with this new genre of scanlation videos on YouTube?

As of today there are about 1600 vids that come up with the query "manga chapters." Clearly this is expanding. The point seems not to be to actually read the scans. You could just download the scans for that... but then what is it? A hybrid between scans and AMVs? Hmmm. @_@ Head is spinning.

Thanks to kenyatta for the pointer.

This recently game across my desk:

Otaku University -- "a conference that’s geared to educate you on the different ways that you can turn your talents in the anime fandom into possible careers!"

O.O

The growing visibility of otaku on campuses across the US is mind boggling to me.

Finished watching Moonchild last night. It had been sitting on my DVD rack for a long time. Keywords: boy-love, vampires, j-pop idols, Japanese expats in Asia, gangsters. Hard to imagine fitting in any more Asian pop culture bling.
